Let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water

Hey, look: We don’t want the oil companies to drill here (NIMBY), nor there or anywhere. So, how many of us have abandoned our automobiles (which are significantly more dangerous to our children) and unhooked our homes and businesses from natural gas to cancel our need for fossil fuels? While I appreciate NOAA’s mission to save us from ourselves, it seems odd that one of its scientists would be out discussing a study (Erie) that scares the daylights out of people, but apparently hasn’t been vetted or even published yet for review. This is a sure recipe for panic. Continue reading…

LP006:Fracking making citizens angry, and State Senator morphs into a flying toaster

On this weeks Longmont Politics, we started with fracking and how some people were unhappy with the 7-0 vote by city council to NOT extend the moratorium.  Recently retired City Manager Gordon Pedrow has become more vocal since retiring and citizens are letting everyone know how they feel about him.  Times-Call letters in response to other letters.  And finally, the bizarre YouTube sensation that claims Colorado State Senator Brandon Shaffer is a flying toaster and recently took on Godzilla in a fight to the death.

LP005:Airport Master Plan, RTD shafts Longmont, and Brandon Shaffer proves his unfitness to serve

On tonights show we talked about the Vance Brand Airport Master Plan passing with a unanimous vote from city council, and some of the ridiculous statements by the airport detractors. RTD has just about completed the shafting of Longmont, and State Senator Brandon Shaffer once again proves he’s not up to the task of being an elected official, or candidate, apparently.

Prisoners of ROAR

Longmont has seen some classic fearmongering campaigns from liberal activists in recent years – the assaults against LifeBridge, HeavenFest, and Airport Runway Extension to name a few –  but the latest anti-fracking paranoia from ROAR (Citizens for Responsible Oil and Gas Regulation) has sunk to the point of out bottom-feeding them all. 3/25/12 Times Call Opinion: “Approve Longmont Airport Master Plan”

(As printed in the March 25, 2012 Times Call Opinion page)

In the March 13 Times-Call, it was reported “Airport officials have said a longer runway would let Vance Brand serve more of its aircraft more of the time. At Longmont’s elevation, a hot summer day can make it difficult for some planes to take off when fully loaded.”

I’d like to add, despite what I hear repeatedly from NIMBYs, the runway extension isn’t just for billionaire jets. Continue reading…
